When you take a look at your legs, you might possibly feel frustrated about the lumpy, bumpy appearance lying beneath your skin.

So what is this cellulite stuff?

Cellulite is actually just a pattern of fat deposits underneath the skin. Because the fat is deposited unevenly in some areas, it gives a lumpy appearance.

While some people may never have any cellulite, others seem to be gifted with an extra supply of it. It tends to show up in places where people have more fat in general. The top places are the buttocks, hips, thighs, and belly.

It’s also referred to as “cottage cheese” because it gives a similar appearance to the skin. And while it may seem like this is a primarily female problem, men can actually get cellulite as well. Perhaps because the style of men’s clothing is different it doesn’t seem as obvious when they have it.

Cellulite doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with you and it doesn’t harm you physically. However, it can make you feel bad about the way you look in shorts or your favorite swimsuit.

Why do some people have cellulite while others don’t?

Most of the answer can be found in your DNA. It seems that people who have more cellulite just come by it naturally. In fact, some people have cellulite who are at ideal weight. But that doesn’t mean that there’s nothing you can do to change the situation.

There are a few lifestyle factors that can affect whether or not you have cellulite. For example, people who have more stress are more likely to have cellulite. Taking birth control pills can also contribute to increased cellulite.

If you’re not very active, you may also find that you have more cellulite. And if you tend to be on the heavy side, you may see more cellulite. Extra weight can increase cellulite’s appearance under the skin.

There’s nothing more frustrating than losing weight or exercising only to find that your cellulite doesn’t go away. If you have cellulite, don’t despair. In this day and age there are many treatments for this cosmetic problem.

There are several treatments that can really help you to decrease the appearance of the cellulite. These include creams, supplements, and some more complex procedures such as laser treatment and even liposuction.

The treatment for you will depend on the severity of your cellulite and its response to treatment. For example, if creams and exercises are working you won’t need the more invasive types of procedures.

Understanding what is cellulite is the first step toward getting help for it.
